Can anyone recommend any film or written texts with racism as a key theme that are suitable for Stage 1 and Stage 2 ESL classes? |

More recommended books
Barry Noodles and the DaKillerBs by Hung Le (a book for upper primary students. The main character is a Vietnamese Australian boy who is juggling his two cultures and having lots of fun along the way. There are lots of sketches, different fonts and zany ideas. The author is a Vietnamese Australian comedian and musician). No more borders for Josef by Diana Chase (a book for upper primary. The story is about a Serb-Croat boy who comes to live in WA. He becomes involved in working in an animal refuge and learns about caring for Australian animals). |

Books with cultural perspectives
The following books have been reviewed by an ESL teacher and recommended for use with ESL students: Camel Rider by Prue Mason (an adventure in the middle east for 2 boys who don't share a a common language. The story is told from two perspectives and would suit boys in particular, aged 10+. Fortune Cookies by Christine Harris (a collection of short stories, each involving people from different cultural backgrounds living in Australia. Harris is a local Adelaide author. The stories are easy to read and suitable for high school students). |

Youtube video
Thanks for letting us know about this website. It's a thought provoking video and has endless possibilities for working with all students, not just ESL learners, particularly through a critical visual literacy lens. |

Functional Grammar Texts
The same authors below also have a book, "Getting started with functional grammar" which is pitched at a secondary / adult level. Its okay .. also, the text book you get with the "Language and Literacy, classroom approaches to functional grammar" course at the EDC is well worth it ... |

Functional Grammar book
Some people at the network meeting were asking about any good functional grammar books. Here's the title of a book that those of us who have used it would highly recommend: Grammar and Meaning: an introduction for primary teachers. by Louise Droga and Sally Humphrey published by Target Texts The price is approximately $30. Don't be put off by the old fashioned looking blue toned cover. I know that it can be purchased through the AATE/ ALEA BOOKSHOP on Magill Rd at Kensington Gardens (or check out their website) OR it can be ordered directly from the publishers (Target Texts) via their website http://www.targettexts.com/TargetTexts/ |

Integrated Studies
Hi, Lets see if there is a response .. I am currently designing a stage one Integrated Studies subject (group 1) for mainly Sudanese boys .. I was wondering if anyone was already teaching something similar and could share some ideas ... obviously it would have a literacy focus, and be a preparation for SACE - we were thinking of including things like swim training / beach awareness! any ideas? |
